Christmas isn’t too far away and those of us, who love to gift our dear ones thoughtful, worthy gifts, plan ahead. We prepare long list, keep leeway with a few choices, then decide on the preferable locales for shopping, to get items of the right quality. We make timetables and plan to finish our shopping well in hand so as to avoid the last minute rush that most of us inevitable have to tackle in the end. There are always a few some things, which one forgot to buy till the last moment; a friend or relative that somehow got left out of the original list. Who would want to be a source of pain or embarrassment to anyone, least of all a dear friend, that too during the season of goodwill?

Yes, as soon as one Christmas gets over, nebulous thoughts of the next Christmas slowly start accumulating. A vague notion of - next year I think I’ll buy her that… then her set will be complete. Or wish I knew he had developed such a passion for cooking…that blender I saw, would have been an ideal gift… if his interest continues to grow, next year I should definitely gift him one of the latest kitchen appliances. He would have loved that – maybe next year…. Or even, I wish I get that next year… if I give hints, dad will surely gift me that… and so it continues, for most of us have no control over our thoughts and they go tumbling over each other, wandering here, there and everywhere.

Halt right there in your tracks! This is Christmas we are talking about. All of us complain that we are commercialising everything, yet we are right there in the middle, so relishing every aspect of Christmas that gives us all the earthly pleasures that we are oblivious to our spiritual needs. We spend time and money on Christmas decorations and what a visual treat it is to rest eyes on a beautifully bedecked Christmas tree, or a room resplendent in the colours of Christmas: white, red and green. We splurge on food, drink, and company and thoroughly enjoy everything about Christmas, the wonderful aromas emanating from the kitchen as well as the merry sounds of Christmas carols rising on the eventide. Well, Christmas is a festive celebration and meant for enjoying with ones families and dear ones. At the same time, we should not forget, it’s a time for spirituality; a time to pause and be conscious of being close to God, to thank him for all that we have received and to pray. It is the time for midnight mass; feeling the presence of God; a time to commune with God and accept that we are a part of him and will one day go back to him.

In some part of our souls, we all know this; we are aware of having our own special relationship with Him. It’s just that our busy lives make us lose focus but we owe it to ourselves to make sure that our feet are firmly grounded, to consciously reaffirm our relationship with God from time to time. We should try to avoid wastage and needless spending when so many are below the poverty line and it is our Christian duty to think of these people, to extend our hands in help. When we spend money on Christmas gifts this year, let it be on Christian Gifts, let it be on Spiritual Gifts that will lift our Christmas above mundane earthly pleasures, instead be a true celebration of the festival of giving.
